The Adoration of the Magi (1480)

The Adoration of the Magi (1480)
Filippino Lippi ca. 1457 – 1504
oil and tempera on panel (57 × 86 cm) — ca. 1480

Matthew 2:11 - And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.

An early work by Lippi, strongly influenced by Botticelli.
In the background, far away, several saints, to the left, Tobias and the archangel Raphael at the well. To the left of them St Jerome kneels in penitence before a cross.
A beam of starlight falls on Mary's head.
Lippi made another Adoration of the Magi in 1496.
