The Denial of Peter

The Denial of Peter
Gerard (Gerrit) van Honthorst 1590 – 1656
oil on canvas (150 × 197 cm) — c. 1620

Mark 14:70 - And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.

Honthorst takes a leaf from Caravaggio's book on how to use light for dramatic effect. The common faces on the figures add to the painting's realism: "Hey you, weren't you with that Galilean?!" >>> Peter
