The Denial of Peter

The Denial of Peter
Gerard Seghers 1591 – 1651
oil on canvas (123 × 161 cm) — c. 1620

Matthew 26:69 - Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.

"Aren't you...", the woman seems to say when she recognizes Peter as one of Jesus' followers. "Is he really!", say the two men to the right. There is panic in Peter's eyes as his hands gesture "Who, me? No way!" He thus denies his master.

Seghers painted in the style of Caravaggio. The faces, with their lively expressions, are only visible because of the light from the candle. The flame doesn't draw attention because Seghers put the woman's hand in front of it.
