Job and his False Comforters (1452-60)

Job and his False Comforters (1452-60)
Jean Fouquet ca. 1420 – 1477/81
illumination — 1452-60
Job 2:12 - And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.
Two of Job's friends try to cheer him up by playing music for him. Job has been struck with disaster. In the background Job's cattle is being taken away.

Job himself is not visible. This panel is the outside of the right wing of the Jabach altarpiece; Job is on the left panel.

The man on the right shows resemblance to Dürer himself. It might be a selfportrait.
