Jesus invites Matthew to be His Disciple

Bible 1
Jesus was on the outskirts of the town of Capernaum.
Bible 2
He saw a booth where tax was collected. Tax collectors were very unpopular with the local people as they worked for the Romans and often overcharged and cheated people out of money. The person at the booth had the Jewish name Levi and the Greek name Matthew.
Bible 3
Jesus went up to Matthew and said, ‘Follow me and be my disciple.’ Matthew immediately got up, left everything and followed Jesus.

Bible 4
Later, Matthew held a banquet in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor. Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests also ate with them.
Bible 5
The Pharisees and the teachers of religious law came to see what was happening at the banquet.

Bible 6
They complained bitterly to Jesus’ disciples, ‘Why do you eat and drink with such sinners?’
Bible 7
Jesus wanted them to show mercy and replied, ‘Healthy people don’t need a doctor but sick people do. I have not come to save those who think they are right with God, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.’
