Jesus answers a trick question on taxes

Bible 1
Every day, while Jesus was at the feast of the Passover, He taught in the Temple courtyard.
Bible 2
Crowds listened carefully to everything Jesus said.
Bible 3
The Chief Priests were alarmed at how popular Jesus was becoming and were scheming to find a way to have Him arrested and killed.

Bible 4
Some Pharisees and supporters of Herod came up with a plan to trick Jesus into saying something that would so upset the Romans they would put Him to death. They sent spies, pretending to be sincere listeners, to ask Jesus a question.
Bible 5
The spies went up to Jesus. ‘Teacher we know that you speak and teach what is right. You teach the truth and God’s ways.’
Bible 6
Then they asked, ‘Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’

Bible 7
Those listening knew Jesus was trapped. If He said it was right to pay taxes to Caesar then He would become very unpopular with the crowds who hated paying taxes to the Romans.
Bible 8
If Jesus said it was wrong to pay taxes to Caesar then the Romans would arrest Jesus as a rebel and put Him to death. Jesus knew these spies were trying to trick Him. He answered, ‘Show me a denarius coin.’
Bible 9
They gave Jesus a denarius coin.

Bible 10
‘Whose image do you see on it?’ Jesus asked ‘Caesar’s,’ came the reply.
Bible 11
‘Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s,’ Jesus replied, ‘and give to God the things that are God’s.’

Bible 12
Those listening were astonished by His answer. The Pharisees and supporters of Herod went away frustrated they had failed to trap Jesus.
Bible 13
However they were even more determined to find a way to kill Him.
